In 1929, Paul Couzyn established the firm that was later to become Couzyn, Hertzog & Horak.

Paul Couzyn shared the early years of the practice with partners who went on to become politicians (Hans Strijdom - Prime Minister of the Union of South-Africa), captains of international industry (Dirk Hertzog – co-founder of the Rembrandt Group with his friend Anton Rupert) and Attie Horak (noted lawyer and scholar).
